Doraco has completed the first stage of the reconstruction of Helskie Quay at the Port of Gdynia. The quay, over 400 meters in length, has been handed over for operation. Work on the quay is still ongoing, with the entire project scheduled for completion in 2026.
Doraco announced the completion of the first stage of redevelopment at Helskie Quay in the Port of Gdynia. Over a 17-month period, a new quay measuring more than 400 meters in length and with a technical depth of 15.5 meters was built, along with a crane track spanning 1,171 meters. The completed infrastructure includes new hydrotechnical structures with a quay deck and equipment, concrete road surfaces, a water supply network, stormwater and sanitary drainage systems, and an electrical power network. The new infrastructure has already been handed over for operation.
“The construction was carried out while the Baltic Container Terminal remained fully operational, which required exceptional precision and coordination. During the project, we introduced innovative technologies, including a pioneering method of sealing and protection against artesian water outflow, ensuring safety against potential breach of the pressurized groundwater table,” said Piotr Siemaszko, Director of the Hydrotechnical Division at Doraco. “This allowed us to accelerate construction while enhancing the structural safety.”
The company emphasized that conducting the work “under traffic,” meaning during ongoing terminal operations, required close cooperation with terminal users and meticulous coordination. Additional challenges included fluctuations in water levels and the time and logistical constraints of working on the water, such as mooring, unmooring, and maneuvering of vessels.
“Organizing all these activities demanded advanced coordination and logistics skills to avoid disrupting normal port operations while ensuring safety and smooth progress of construction works,” added Adam Mańka, Contract Director at Doraco Construction Corporation.
Divers played a key role in many of the operations during reconstruction. During demolition, piling, reinforced concrete, sanitary, and equipment works, they continuously monitored for accidental breaches of the pressurized groundwater table or uncontrolled underwater concrete spillage.
Doraco continues its work at the Port of Gdynia. The next stage of the project involves the demolition of Helskie Quay II and Oksywskie Quay, and the construction of a new quay section with full equipment. Plans also include an additional crane track, the construction of a cargo handling surface with a load capacity of 40 kN/m², and necessary water, sewage, electrical, and telecommunication networks. The completion of this phase is scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
