Shipowner Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has launched a new short sea service – Baltic–North West Continent (NWC) to Spain and Portugal – providing Polish exporters and importers with direct access to key consumer and industrial markets across Europe.

Maritime transport as a strategic link for Poland

MSC’s new service establishes a reliable and more sustainable transport corridor between Poland and the United Kingdom, one of the country’s most important trading partners. The rotation has been designed with sectors such as automotive, electronics, furniture, machinery, plastics, paper and consumer goods in mind. It offers predictable transit times and a secure, efficient solution for time-sensitive cargo.

“Short sea solutions are increasingly becoming a strategic alternative to road transport. With predictable transit times and regular sailings, we enable our customers to strengthen supply chain resilience while reducing the carbon footprint of European logistics,” says Justyna Zadorożna, Short Sea Expert at MSC Poland.

Direct connections to Spain and Portugal open access to major Southern European centres of consumption and production. Customers benefit from competitive short sea solutions that reinforce supply chain resilience while limiting the environmental impact of inland transport.

The service is operated by vessels of 4,500 TEU capacity. The inaugural call under the new rotation took place in December. In Poland, ships are handled at the Baltic Container Terminal (BCT).

Comprehensive door-to-door solutions

MSC provides flexible door-to-door services integrated with domestic and international road and rail networks, ensuring continuity of cargo handling throughout the entire transport chain. Dedicated teams in Poland support customers with customs clearance procedures, including AEO certification. Inland deliveries at destination are managed directly by local MSC offices, which also offer flexible warehousing options.

As a result, maritime transport becomes as straightforward as road haulage, while retaining the advantages of moving large volumes in a cost-effective, reliable manner suited to long-term logistics planning.

Modern equipment and specialised solutions

MSC offers specialist equipment and tailored solutions to meet diverse cargo requirements:

• 45’ Pallet Wide containers – accommodating up to 33 Euro pallets, enabling seamless transfer from road to sea without rehandling, saving time and reducing costs

• Reefer technology – advanced refrigerated containers maintaining precise temperature conditions throughout the voyage, protecting product integrity and minimising losses

• Specialist equipment: Open Top and Flat Rack – designed for heavy and out-of-gauge cargo, ensuring safe and compliant transport of machinery and non-standard loads

• MSC Cargo Cover – comprehensive protection against physical loss or damage, providing financial security and peace of mind

• Electronic Bill of Lading (eBL) – fully digital documentation accelerating document flow, reducing the risk of errors and enabling faster cargo release

“By combining modern equipment with integrated logistics solutions, we enable customers to move cargo in an efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible manner. That is what distinguishes our short sea service,” adds Zadorożna.
