A new sulphuric acid terminal at the Port of Szczecin
Date of publication: 27.06.2012

On 29th May 2012, in the Szczecin seaport, the sulphuric acid terminal was officially opened.
The terminal is situated in the area administered by the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority at the Katowicki Peninsula close to a bulk cargo handling area. KGHM Metraco S.A. built 3 tanks of total 33 thousand tonnes at the Katowicki Quay. The tanks are linked with the quay with pipelines and feeding installation enables loading sulphuric acid on ships. Acid is transported to the port from steel mills in Legnica and Głogów and then exported by sea to North and South Americas. A company providing professional cargo handling is Bulk Cargo Port Szczecin. The annual cargo handling at the terminal is expected to reach 200 thousand tonnes.
The opening of the facility has crowned the effort of the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority to develop infrastructure at new quays and adjust existing quays to handling various type of cargo. This should help the Port attracting investors interested in financing, building and operating terminals, as well as creating port industry and supporting sea trade in the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście. The Port provides infrastructure facilitating access from water (port basins, quays) and from land (road and rail), as well as connections to utilities (power, telephone, water, sewage, etc.).
The idea to encourage companies to move their operations to the ports resulted in a number of investment projects. Companies with foreign interest have been investing and successfully operating in the ports for many years now.
The KGHM Metraco S.A. investment is yet another example of Ports openness to inward investment. The establishing of the KGHM Metraco terminal required the Ports Authority to invest at the Katowicki Peninsula, modernise berthing facilities at the extension of the peninsula and provide railway track, utilities and a transformer station.
