At the Karstensen Shipyard Poland in Gdańsk, another trawler destined for an overseas shipowner was launched. This was the fifth such event this year.
The launched vessel was moved to the quay, and further work is still required before it can be towed to the main contractor, Danish Karstensens Skibsværft A/S. There, the ship will be further outfitted and then delivered to the ordering party, Vardin, a leading Faroese fishing and processing company. Unlike the previous launch in July this year, this event was not open to the public.
The trawler under construction, Sjurdur Tollaksson, has hull number 486. It is 44.1 meters long, 11.5 meters wide, and has a draft of 4.6 meters, with a displacement of 900 tons. The hull is ice-class certified by DNV, confirming its capability to operate in cold northern waters. This aligns with its intended use – pelagic fishing of species such as mackerel, herring, blue whiting, and capelin.
The vessel will be equipped for crew operations, including gutting, beheading, and further processing of the catch, including deep-freezing. Onboard, there is a cargo hold with a volume of 465 m³, capable of storing frozen cargo at temperatures down to -20°C. The ship is already equipped with propulsion systems, although their commissioning, along with further interior outfitting, will take place in Denmark. From there, it will sail to its home port in Gotu on the Faroe Islands.
The trawler is scheduled to be towed to Denmark at the beginning of October for further work by the main contractor. This process is expected to take six months. Work in Gdańsk will not stop, however, as Karstensen Shipyard Poland plans to launch another very similar vessel, hull number 487, later this year. After launching the current vessel, the next hull will take its place on the slipway, and structural assembly will begin, ensuring continuity of production in a semi-assembly line process.
