An operator at the Port of Szczecin has announced another cargo handling record after achieving an import steel coils discharge rate of 11,909 tonnes in just 20 hours between 27 and 28 June.
According to Bulk Cargo – Port Szczecin, the achievement was primarily the result of effective teamwork. While the terminal's equipment performed flawlessly, the company stressed that even the best machinery cannot set records on its own. Behind every steel coil handled stood the experience, focus and mutual trust of employees who understand that every stage of the operation is critical.
The result also reflects the benefits of the recent modernisation of Szczecin's port infrastructure. Completed last year, the upgrade has enabled the port to handle larger vessels and higher cargo volumes. The port now offers a technical depth of 12.5 metres and an operational depth of 11 metres, compared with the previous maximum vessel draught of 9 metres.
The multi-year redevelopment programme was carried out under the EU Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme 2014–2020. The project was designed to improve the port's competitiveness by accommodating deeper-draught vessels and included the reconstruction of three existing quays and the construction of two new ones. The works required the use of tens of thousands of cubic metres of concrete, as well as kilometres of steel pipes, sheet piles and foundation piles to reinforce the new infrastructure.
