Ceremonial ground breaking ceremony for the construction of an offshore wind tower factory in Gdańsk
Date of publication: 31.08.2023

Industrial Development Agency S.A. together with strategic partner GRI Renewable Industries S.L. and Baltic Towers Sp. z o.o. begins the implementation of a new investment to support the development of Offshore Wind Energy (MEW). This is a breakthrough event for the Polish renewable energy sector.

On August 31, 2023, the construction of an offshore tower factory was inaugurated in Gdańsk. This is an investment that is expected to be a significant step towards strengthening Poland's position in the field of renewable energy. The inaugural ceremony gathered many guests from the wind energy sector and representatives of local and national authorities.

The construction of a new offshore tower factory in Gdańsk, which is a joint venture of ARP S.A. (Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu; Industrial Development Agency), the Spanish company GRI Renewable Industries, S.L., and the company Baltic Towers sp. z o.o. established to carry out the investment, is expected to contribute to significant progress in the development of the wind energy sector in Poland. As part of the new investment, located in Gdańsk with access to the waterfront, a hall will be built for the production of offshore towers for the largest planned wind turbines with a capacity above 15 MW. The modern production plant, designed and built in accordance with Industry 4.0 standards, will have production capacity capable of implementing over 150 towers per year. The new plant will meet the highest technical, quality and environmental standards set by key customers on the MEW market.

Thanks to the use of innovative solutions, already at the design stage, the newly built plant will be friendly to both employees and the environment. Over 500 highly specialized jobs will be created in the modern and promising offshore wind energy industry.

Offshore wind energy is currently one of the fastest growing energy sectors. Both the dynamic economic situation driven by European energy policy, the implemented energy transformation processes in Poland, and the adopted Act on the promotion of electricity generation in offshore wind farms aim to significantly increase the share of renewable energy in energy production. Such conditions justify the investment decisions made, which not only meet market demand, but also contribute to increasing energy security in Poland and Europe.

It is worth emphasizing that the new investment fits perfectly into the concept of "local content", which is an important element of the transformation and acceleration of the Polish economy - modernizing and developing it in terms of Polish economic interest and involvement in the development of the local community.

The effects of this investment will be visible and felt at the local level, supporting the development of local resources and contributing to the creation of a lasting heritage for the Gdańsk community and beyond.

This is an investment that will be part of the economic landscape of the Tricity for years, restoring industrial functions in the area of the southern end of Ostrów Island.

The Industrial Development Agency has been caring for the reconstruction of the industrial potential of the Polish economy for years. In turn, the new ARP strategy involves more investments in the energy transformation. I am convinced that the construction of a factory of towers for offshore wind energy in Gdańsk is a tailwind for the entire Polish economy. This is a project that combines economic interests and those related to the strategic energy security of Poland and Europe - emphasized Cezariusz Lesisz, President of the Management Board of Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu S.A.

Jon Riberas, Owner of GRI Renewable Industries, S.L., also spoke during the event:

- GRI is proud to participate in this important wind energy project in Poland, striving for sustainable development and carbon neutrality. The joint venture in Poland will create a global leader in the offshore energy market, which will contribute to achieving ambitious goals for installed renewable energy in the next decade.

The ceremony was a symbolic event, marking the beginning of the construction of the factory, which is to become an important element in the renewable energy supply chain in Poland and Europe in the second quarter of 2025.
