Improving life at sea – this is our motto included in each construction of the international design studio HAVYARD DESIGN & ENGINEERING POLAND. The application of state-of-the-art technological solutions ensures continued improvement of the conditions and safety of work at sea. Many solutions designed in the Polish branch of the company from Sopot are tested in the most demanding environment – in the operation of the offshore industry, and even among the ice fields of the North Pole.
Origin
HAVYARD DESIGN & ENGINEERING POLAND is a part of the Norwegian company HAVYARD DESIGN & SOLUTIONS dealing with the development of projects in the HAVYARD Group. The company is a supplier of technological solutions in the entire scope of the design process: from the initial design to the workshop design at the stage of its implementation in the construction of a ship in the shipyard.
Designs of engine rooms and hull structures are performed in Sopot.
The company was established in 2006 following the initiative of Robert Olesz, Dariusz Frankowski, and Erik Kirkemo, owner of the Steelcad company from Norway. From the very beginning, the company aimed at the execution of designs for the purposes of the HAVYARD Headquarters.
- After several years of close cooperation, the designs executed for the HAVYARD Group turned out to constitute approximately 90% of all of our projects. This situation inspired the idea of involving the international Group which acquired the majority of the shares of our company.
One year ago, the Polish company commenced work under the firm HAVYARD DESIGN & ENGINEERING POLAND. Changes in the ownership structure also influenced work organisation. The majority of works involving engineers and designers from the design studio in Sopot had mainly concerned the structure of the hull. After the company became a part of the Group, a decision was taken to expand the scope of the services by establishing the ship machinery and ship installations design departments.
The team of the design studio currently includes 30 engineers. The acquisition by the HAVYARD Group and the following intensification of activities between 2009 and 2013 resulted in an increase in employment by 20 persons.
- The interest of the leading companies in the global offshore market in the design team resulted from the quality we offer. Our greatest capital was and is our employee team.
Polish engineers are known for their high qualifications in the shipbuilding industry. Norwegian companies searching for affordable contractors in Poland had the opportunity to get familiar with the level of work of our technical staff, including engineers and ship designers. It did not come by surprise that large companies searching for designers and partners frequently conduct recruitment and initiate cooperation with Polish specialists.
New perspectives
The incorporation with the large global group opened the company to new solutions.
- From the very beginning of the existence of the design studio, we mainly participated in the execution of designs of ships supporting offshore platforms. We initially focused on designing the structure and equipment of the hull. As a branch of HAVYARD DESIGN & Solutions, we execute a full range of design works: from hull structure, engine rooms and ship installations to interior design.
HAVYARD DESIGN & ENGINEERING POLAND has the capacity to deliver a complete documentation package, including classification and workshop documentation.
The general design is prepared in Norway. The headquarters develop the concept and plan of a ship. The role of the Polish branch begins at the stage of classification documentation. Polish engineers attempt to reconcile the assumptions of the concept with the construction and available means. The documentation package is subject to approval by the classification society.
Within the last year, the design studio commenced work on 8 projects. According to the company’s representative, the previous year was definitely the best in terms of the number of design orders, team composition, and the applied construction solutions.
- The primary success was the establishment of the engine department dealing with engine rooms and ship installations. It prepares diagrams and plans of engine rooms with coordination and 3D modelling of all installations constituting the ship’s equipment.
One of the most unique designs included in the company’s rich portfolio is Havyard 587 – a vessel for transporting live fish.
- The element distinguishing the construction is a set of 3 cylindrical containers with a volume of 3 250 m3. The containers are equipped in devices ensuring water circulation. The solution is aimed at creating an artificial environment possibly similar to the natural one. The load of live fish transported in this manner will generate a much better price than delivery of fish supplied to the centre of first sale in the traditional way.
According to HAVYARD DESIGN & ENGINEERING POLAND, Havyard 587 is the most technologically advanced fishing vessel designed so far. The ready hull was delivered to Norway by a Turkish shipyard. The current works concern the activation of the engine room. The ship is now being subject to finishing works and equipment installation at the Havyard shipyard at Leirvik i Sogn in Norway. We will soon commence the first tests at sea. The unique vessel will be named “FS Stormy”, and will be delivered to the ship-owner already in March 2014.
The year 2013 also offered the opportunity to participate in the most important projects involving the technology applied in the offshore sector.
- We already received the confirmation of commencement of design works on an icebreaker by Femco for a Russian recipient. The vessel is designated as Havyard 843 ICE. The entire design was prepared at the Havyard design studio, and will be launched at the same shipyard as the innovative fishing ship. The icebreaker will start operating in September 2015. The ship will have class DNV Icebreaker Ice 10. This means that the vessel will be able to break ice with a thickness of even more than 1 m. The ship will operate in Arctic conditions.
The function of Havyard 843 ICE will be clearing space for offshore platforms located the furthest to the north. These areas are distinguished by difficult marine conditions. The icebreaker will overcome the most severe weather conditions breaking the ice cover. Until recently, ships had to form a convoy led by an icebreaker making way for the remaining vessels. The icebreaker designed by HAVYARD DESIGN is prepared for independent work. It does not have to cooperate with vessels forming a convoy.
Havyard 858DSV diving support vessel is the most important design resulting from the cooperation of the design studio in Sopot with the headquarters in Norway. It is one of the most advanced designs of a diving support vessel in the world.
- A large portion of the works was performed by our engineers. Their work was rewarded by recognising Havyard 858DSV as the design of the year 2011 at the prestigious Offshore Support Journal Conference in London.
A part of the vessel is a diving bell for 24 people. The equipment enables saturated diving up to a depth of 400 m. The ship is equipped with a 250 ton crane of AHC type. The installation compensates the ship’s movement on waves during work at sea. The ship enables divers to work in places located at a high distance from the shore.
This is the first experience of the HAVYARD Group in designing vessels of the type.
According to the management of HAVYARD DESIGN & ENGINEERING POLAND, the Polish market offers potential strongly influencing the dynamics of the entire HAVYARD Group.
- Our company based on a creative teams is capable of transforming even the most ambitious ideas and design assumptions into ready solutions. We are currently an integral part of the Group.
