III Symposium Safe Shipping on the Baltic Sea - Szczecin, 23 April 2010
Date of publication: 15.03.2010

We have the pleasure to invite you to an event dedicated to SAFE SHIPPING ON THE BALTIC SEA. The symposium will provide a discussion forum for Baltic Maritime Administrations and shipowners to identify and address problems of Baltic Shipping, which faces dangerous weather condition, heavy traffic and environmental hazards on the Baltic.

Jan Jankowski
Chairman of the Organising Committee
Polish Register of Shipping

Shipping in the Baltic Sea Region is specific by nature. The Baltic Sea is a small and enclosed water basin featuring characteristic, dangerous weather conditions, hazardous particularly for some ship types. The specificity of shipping also includes heavy traffic of people and goods between the well-developed countries around the Baltic. The Gdańsk 2009 Symposium SAFE SHIPPING ON THE BALTIC SEA confirmed both the specifics and the needs revealing several issues of general concern for Baltic maritime players. The Szczecin 2010 Symposium provides a continuation of the discussion forum for maritime administrations and shipowners to identify and discuss measures for progressing safe shipping on the Baltic.

Discussion will follow several introductory papers addressing four key issues identified during the Gdańsk 2009 Symposium:.

  • Baltic Sea Regional Initiatives;
  • Rating the safety level;
  • Challenges of the growing trade on the Baltic;
  • Holistic survey of the Baltic Sea.

The Symposium is organized under the auspices of the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure, with the attendance of Ms Anna Wypych-Namiotko, Undersecretary of State.
