
The Baltic Development Forum Summit “Connecting Europe – Smart and Green Partnerships” and European Commission’s 3 Annual Forum on the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, which took place this year in Copenhagen on 17-19 June, and instigated closer co-operation of Poland and Denmark sealed with a “letter of intent” between Polish Register of Shipping and Marine Development Centre of Europe to develop transport related innovations in the two respective countries.
The following were identified amongst the areas for cross border co-operation:
•Development of LNG and gas fuelled propulsion for ships;
•Development of offshore windmill energy generation devices;
•Development of robots and robotic technology for ships and offshore construction;
•Competence development with the maritime and related industries;
•Electrical and hybrid transport solutions;
•Development of underwater remotely controlled vehicles for offshore mining.
The Summit was officially opened by H.R.H. Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Frank Jensen gave the welcome address. Amongst the keynote speakers were Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Prime Minister of Denmark, Andrus Ansip, Prime Minister of Estonia, Siim Kallas, Vice-President; Commissioner for Transport, European Commission.
The summit also welcomed statements from Nicolai Wammen, Minister for European Affairs, Denmark and Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Regional Policy, European Commission, and Hans Skov Christensen, Chairman, Baltic Development Forum.
This year’s summit brought together more than 800 stakeholders, and provided a unique platform for leaders from government, political parties, business, academia and civil society to discuss cooperation possibilities and growth initiatives in the Baltic Sea Region.
