The CRIST shipyard ended 2019 with many projects started and completed for foreign shipowners. It represents the highest level of service in line with international trends that operate on the shipping market. We presented a summary of the shipyard's activities in 2019 and the floating wonders of marine technologies created or co-created by it.

Biggest in the world

CRIST shipyard built a partially equipped hull of the world's largest hybrid plug-in ferry - Color.

The Color Hybrid ferry is 160 meters long and 27.10 meters wide. It is equipped with a hybrid main propulsion system, which combined with the appropriate parameters of the unit ensures its high maneuverability. The process of charging the battery is always carried out in the port with the help of a power cable from special coastal facilities or on the ship's deck.

Modern solutions for reducing noise and emissions have been used on the ferry. The ship does not emit harmful nitrogen and sulfur compounds and carbon dioxide. The battery of the 5 MWh unit weighs 65 t and can be charged in one hour. The unit also has a 5 megawatts heat recovery system that uses heat to heat the unit, including from exhaust gas. Together with the optimal hull design, these solutions make the ferry energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The Color Hybrid have seats for 2,000 passengers and 500 vehicles.

Diversity and quality

The shipyard also built fully equipped fish carrier NB SC 75/2 - the second in the series and the third in history for Arctic Group AS. The vessel was launched in July last year deals with transporting fish and seafood from sea farms straight to the processing plant. The vessel was designed for the transport of live salmon, trout, cod and other species of farmed marine fish. Live fish are stored in tanks equipped with sea water circulation, oxygen water treatment system and automatic ozone decontamination system for tanks. Fish is loaded and unloaded on the vessel using a vacuum method. The vessel is 75.7 meters long, 15 meters wide and height of to the upper deck is 8 meters.

On June 9, Crist also delivered a fully equipped hybrid passenger and car ferry handed over to Icelandic shipowner Vegagerðin. The unit is to handle demanding courses between the islands of the Westman archipelago.

The NB 70 ferry "Herjólfur" operates a route between Landeyjahöfn and Vestmannaeyjar - islands located in the Westman archipelago, located 9 kilometers from the south of Iceland. Vestmannaeyjar is known as a charming, volcanic excursion destination and from the famous photo of a lonely house located near the cliff.

Travel time on this route will be only 20 minutes. This will be possible thanks to the unit's parameters and equipment ensuring high maneuverability and an efficient propulsion system. The ship is equipped with a hybrid main propulsion system.

The modern design of NB 70 allows it to operate in very difficult sea conditions - the southern waters of Iceland are dominated by long ocean waves and short local waves caused by wind. In winter, the weather conditions do not spoil - low temperatures and heavy rains are not a challenge for the ferry built at the CRIST shipyard.

Following the markets trends

At the beginning of September 2019, CRIST Shipyard transferred a partially equipped ship for offshore wind energy. The vessel with construction number NB 315 was commissioned by Ulstein Verft AS.

NB 315 is an Offshore Service Vessel, used during construction, assembly and maintenance work on offshore wind farms. It is a sister unit of the Acta Auriga, handed over by Ulstein shipyard in March 2018. Partially equipped, it was also provided by the CRIST shipyard.

The NB 315 is 93.50 m long, 18.00 m wide, has 7.60 m side height, 6 m draft, 6 050 GT and 3 175 t load capacity. It was equipped with in a lift, crane with 3D compensation and in an energy-efficient drive system, including the Ulstein battery system. Thanks to the X-STERN design solution, noise, impacts and vibrations caused by waves will be reduced. The ship's design was adapted to the tender requirements of GE Renewable Energy and the vessel's owner. It has already been approved for use.

Unconventional projects


In April last year, Crist Shipyard completed the construction of a partially equipped hull of one of the most innovative passenger ships in the world on behalf of Lindblad Expeditions - National Geographic Endurance.

The unit accommodates 126 passengers in 69 spacious cabins and apartments. 75% of them have balconies, viewing terraces and observation wings have been made available so that you can enjoy views from all sides of the ship. Exploration will also be facilitated by the innovative "Zodiac" system, which will enable quick and safe disembarkation, providing express access to every destination. To complement the unit's capabilities, guests can also use kayaks, cross-country skis, a remote-controlled vehicle (ROV), a microscope and underwater video cameras.

Endurance has the highest ice class and is built in accordance with the patented hull design from the X-BOW line. The use of this solution in a passenger ship reduces the impact of waves on the hull, which increases travel comfort and reduces noise and vibration. The shape and closed nature of the X-BOW are also intended to minimize the risk of wave splashing, excluding the risks and nuisances of slippery or icy decks. The mere movement of the unit in polar conditions will also be facilitated. Endurances are able to adapt to adverse conditions at sea, flowing through the Arctic areas. By using the patented X-BOW hull, the unit will have a much smaller impact on the environment, while reducing daily operating costs.
