Polska Grupa Energetyczna and Ørsted have signed an agreement for the production and delivery of another batch of secondary steel components for the foundations of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm. These elements will be manufactured in Poland. The suspended internal platforms will be supplied by Smulders. They will be produced in Żary (Lubusz region), while their assembly and final outfitting will take place in Świnoujście.
Secondary steel components for the foundations play an important role. They enable operational teams to access the wind turbine and the switchgear in order to carry out technical interventions.
“The newly signed agreement is good news for the increasingly dynamic domestic supply chain for offshore wind energy in Poland. The production of key elements necessary for the construction and later safe operation of the offshore wind farm will take place in the country – in the Lubusz region and in Pomerania. A constant priority in PGE’s investment activities is the gradual increase of local content in our projects. Using manufacturing facilities located in Poland and the expertise of the specialists working there is another building block that strengthens the contribution of Polish industry to this huge investment programme, which is the construction of offshore wind farms in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea,” said Bartosz Fedurek, President of the Management Board of PGE Baltica.
“Offshore wind is an opportunity for industrial growth both in Poland and across Europe. We are pleased that the secondary steel structures for the foundations of the Baltica 2 project will be produced in Poland. Poland is a new offshore market, yet local content already stands at around 20%, which confirms the positive momentum of Polish company participation. Based on our global experience in developing offshore wind farms on three continents, we know that with each new project more opportunities arise for local players to join the offshore journey,” said Ulrik Lange, Vice President and Managing Director of the Baltica 2 project at Ørsted.
“The Baltica 2 project represents another important milestone in our long-term commitment to Poland’s offshore wind ambitions, a country where Smulders has operated its own production facilities for more than two decades. With Smulders actively participating in all three Polish offshore wind farms currently under construction, we are proud to play a key role in shaping the country’s renewable energy future. We are fully committed to the project’s success in cooperation with Ørsted and PGE,” said Jaap Jansen, Procurement Director at Smulders.
Smulders, a company owned by Eiffage Métal, is a multidisciplinary construction firm employing over 2,000 people in its branches in Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The company focuses on full engineering, manufacturing, and systems integration projects, mainly for the offshore wind market. In Poland, it employs around 700 people, with production facilities located in the Lubusz and Opole regions.
The Baltica 2 project entered the offshore construction phase this year. Seabed preparation for installing foundations and laying subsea cables will begin soon. Since mid-2024, work has been underway on the onshore grid connection infrastructure in the Choczewo municipality. The investors – PGE and Ørsted – have already taken the final investment decision for the project and launched execution processes. They have contracted all key components needed to begin offshore construction of Baltica 2 and have signed all installation contracts – for foundations, cables, turbines and offshore substations. The partners hold all necessary building permits. With 107 turbines and a total capacity of 1.5 GW, the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm will significantly contribute to the transformation of Poland’s energy sector.
