The first of three innovative RoPax passenger and vehicle ferries, Jantar Unity, has recently been completed, fully coated with International Paint systems supplied by AkzoNobel. In total, 280,000 litres of paint were applied, including Interzone 954GF on the car decks. The project was delivered in close collaboration with Gdańsk Remontowa Shipyard, ferry operator Unity Line, and the vessel owner, Polska Żegluga Morska.

Interzone 954GF is a high-solids, low-VOC epoxy coating specially formulated for high-durability and anti-corrosion protection. Reinforced with glass flakes, it offers excellent abrasion resistance and mechanical strength, making it ideal for vehicle decks exposed to heavy loads and long-term operational wear. Its high resistance to cathodic delamination ensures the surface remains protected under extreme conditions.

“We are extremely grateful to Gdańsk Remontowa Shipyard, Polska Żegluga Morska, and Unity Line for trusting AkzoNobel solutions. This project represents an important step in strengthening our collaboration and implementing our strategic goals. We look forward to completing the next two ferries, which will soon be seen operating on the Baltic Sea,” said Mirosław Pawlik, Sales Manager, Marine Coatings Central Europe.

The Jantar Unity is designed to transport trucks and motorised passengers, combining travel comfort, safety, and environmental responsibility. It is equipped with four dual-fuel engines running on LNG and diesel, which reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 25% compared to similar vessels. Its hybrid propulsion system further cuts fuel consumption and emissions, enabling compliance with the strict IMO Tier III emission standards, currently the highest for marine vessels.

“Working with AkzoNobel directly enhances the quality of our vessels. Their products meet the highest standards, which is crucial for us. Importantly, these proven solutions will continue to be applied on the next ferries in the RoPax project,” said Katarzyna Antoń, Marketing Manager at Unity Line.

The ferry measures 195.6 metres in length and 32.2 metres in width, with capacity for 400 passengers and a maximum speed of 19 knots. Its cargo deck stretches 4.1 km, accommodating vehicles end-to-end. The second RoPax ferry is currently under construction, with delivery expected in Q3 2026, while steel cutting for the third vessel is scheduled to begin in Q2 this year.
