Damen Shipyards delivered an ASD Tug 2111 to WUŻ Port and Maritime Services on 23 October. The vessel, named Argo, is the eighth tugboat from the Dutch supplier to join the company’s fleet, further highlighting WUŻ’s commitment to the development of the Port of Gdańsk.

The handover took place in Rotterdam, from where the vessel will proceed to Gdańsk. The tug was built at Damen Shipyards Changde in China, under a contract signed in September last year.

We were honoured to celebrate the vessel’s handover in Rotterdam, which has become a pleasant tradition between our companies, even though this time the weather was typical of the Dutch autumn. We are confident that the new tug Argo will play an important role in supporting WUŻ’s growth in Gdańsk, and we look forward to continued cooperation,” said Vadim Akimov, Sales Director at Damen.

The ASD 2111 is one of the latest models in Damen’s compact tug series. Despite its small size, it offers up to 50 tonnes of bollard pull and has a length of 21 metres. Thanks to its dimensions and capabilities, it is ideally suited for operations within the inner part of the Port of Gdańsk. Although the vessel was built according to the standard ASD Tug 2111 design, Damen customised it to meet WUŻ’s specific requirements. This included the installation of a winter package, FiFi 1 firefighting capabilities, and other modifications allowing it to operate, among others, at the LNG terminal in the Port of Gdańsk.

Before the handover in Rotterdam, the tug’s capabilities were thoroughly tested and demonstrated alongside one of Damen’s fully electric RSD-E 2513 tugboats. In keeping with the company’s tradition, the vessel’s name refers to Greek mythology. The ASD Tug 2111 bears the name Argo, after the famous ship on which Jason and the Argonauts set out in search of the Golden Fleece.

WUŻ emphasises that it is expanding its fleet to support the development of the Port of Gdańsk, which is the largest Baltic seaport in terms of annual cargo throughput. As a result of this long-term activity, the company has become the largest tug operator in Poland and currently operates eighteen vessels, including multiple Damen tug models.
