Jantar Unity, the first of three ferries being built for Polish shipowners at Gdańsk Remontowa Shiprepair Yard, has begun sea trials. The first vessel to officially fly the colors of the new ferry operator POLSCA Baltic Ferries is scheduled to be handed over to the owner next year.
Jantar Unity is the first of three (or four—depending on whether the ordering party exercises the option included in the contract) new ferries being built for Polish shipowners in a Polish shipyard. The ferry was originally intended to operate under the Unity Line brand, which was to receive two new vessels in total. However, during this year’s Maritime Congress in Szczecin, the launch of a new ferry brand, POLSCA Baltic Ferries, was announced. The initiative is backed by three domestic ferry companies: Polska Żegluga Morska (operator of Unity Line), Polska Żegluga Bałtycka (operator of Polferries), and EuroAfrica. As a result, Jantar Unity has already been repainted in the new livery.
The vessel has just begun sea trials in the Baltic Sea. If these do not reveal any major construction issues, the ship will be handed over to the operator after final works are completed at the beginning of next year.
The next vessels are already in line, with all three currently under construction. The second ferry, originally intended for Polferries, has already been launched and is expected to welcome its first passengers in 2027. The third vessel is scheduled to enter service in 2028, with its launch likely to take place this autumn or early winter. All three ferries will operate under the POLSCA Baltic Ferries brand.
The conceptual design, project documentation, and technical drawings for the ferries were prepared by Remontowa Marine Design. The undertaking is significant not only for domestic ferry shipping but also for the shipbuilding industry, as it is expected to drive its development and expand the range of export products. Another important aspect is the involvement of numerous subcontractors, including Marine Projects, Montex, Remontowa Shipbuilding, Holm, and Stal Complex. At the same time, the main contractor, Gdańsk Remontowa Shiprepair Yard, has made it clear that it hopes to attract interest from foreign shipowners in building additional vessels based on this design. The ships in this series will measure 195.6 meters in length and 32.
