Intensive work continues at Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard “Remontowa” S.A. on the new ferries designed for service on the Baltic Sea. Launched in 2023, the future Jantar Unity will soon set out for sea trials. At present, the hull is being painted in the colors of the recently established company POLSCA Baltic Ferries.
Currently, the ro-pax ferry is positioned in a floating dock at the Gdańsk shipyard. Once the painting of the company’s livery and emblem on the hull is completed, the vessel will head for sea trials. The plan calls for its delivery to the owner later this year.
Jantar Unity is the first of three ferries under construction at Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard “Remontowa” S.A. The conceptual design, technical documentation, and detailed engineering were prepared by Remontowa Marine Design. The project is significant not only for the domestic ferry industry but also for the shipbuilding sector, supporting its growth and ensuring a greater share of vessels built at national yards in the fleets of Polish operators. An important aspect of the undertaking is the involvement of numerous subcontractors, including Marine Projects, Montex, Remontowa Shipbuilding, Holm, and Stal Complex.
The ferries of this series will be 195.6 meters long and 32.2 meters wide, with a freight lane of 4,100 meters. They will also be able to accommodate 400 passengers on board, served by a crew of 50. All ferries will be low-emission and capable of reaching a maximum speed of 19 knots. Their propulsion system will consist of four dual-fuel LNG engines with battery support, powered by liquefied natural gas and marine diesel used for ignition. Instead of conventional propellers, each ferry will be equipped with two azimuth thrusters at the stern and two bow thrusters, ensuring enhanced maneuverability in ports. The LNG propulsion system is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by about one quarter compared to current solutions used on similar vessels.
All ferries have been ordered by the state-owned company Polskie Promy. The first and third will join Unity Line, part of the Polish Steamship Company, while the second will be delivered to Polish Baltic Shipping. The contract also includes an option for a fourth vessel for PŻB. The second and third ferries are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
It is worth recalling that in the second half of May this year, the establishment of POLSCA Baltic Ferries was announced, bringing together Polferries, Unity Line, and Euroafrica. This new company was created to expand ferry services on the Baltic Sea and strengthen competitiveness against German and Scandinavian operators. The new ferries under construction will sail under its livery.
