ORP Lublin will start sea trials next week
Date of publication: 18.06.2023
There is hope for the completion of one of the longest renovations of the Polish Navy unit, which began in December 2017. The mine-transport ship is preparing for sea trials, no date has been given for returning to regular service.

As the oldest (commissioned in 1989) of her series of ships, after which the type is named, she was sent for a major overhaul to extend her regular service and bring her condition closer to that of her commencement of operations. The project was planned to be completed in 2019, but due to the shipyard's problems, difficulties with financing and emerging problems, the deadline for commissioning the vessel was extended first to 2021, and then for subsequent years. In March this year we wrote about the start of delivery and acceptance tests, which were supposed to indicate that after six years the ship would return to its mother ship, the 2nd Squadron of Transport and Mine Ships of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, stationed in the Świnoujście War Port.

Such a long time of renovation was the cause of many controversies. All five units were built between 1987 and 1990. This meant that the renovation takes longer not only than the construction of ORP Lublin itself, but also all the ships of the 787 design. more when there is a need to replace the equipment or a thorough inspection of the hull. In addition, mine transport ships are regularly used in the Polish Navy in connection with national and international exercises and operations, during which military equipment is loaded and landed on prepared or unprepared shores. It can therefore be expected that ORP Lublin, after returning to its parent unit, will take part in regular operations of its squadron. The question remains when the twin ships will undergo a similar overhaul, and whether it will take as long.

The increasing age of the Project 787 ships and problems with the renovation of ORP Lublin make us think about their future. There is also the question of whether the Polish Navy will be interested in acquiring their successors, which are potentially units of a different type. In the Polish Navy, there is currently no open discussion on the acquisition of their successors, so if the topic of the program and the acquisition of new mine transport ships or other ships intended for the transport and landing of military technology were ever to come up, it may probably appear after 2030.
