Wind Turbine Blades Arrive in Gdańsk, Headed for Ukraine
Date of publication: 07.04.2025

Fifteen wind turbine blades arrived in Gdańsk aboard the Bahri Diriyah vessel. Tourists visiting Westerplatte were treated to an unusual sight, as the unloading operation took place at the Obrońców Westerplatte Quay.

The Bahri Diriyah entered the Port of Gdańsk on April 1 around 10:00 a.m. The 194-meter vessel, sailing under the Saudi Arabian flag, delivered 15 massive wind turbine blades from India. It moored at the Obrońców Westerplatte Quay.

Each blade brought to Gdańsk measures 78.6 meters in length and weighs 34 tons. Although the Obrońców Westerplatte Quay is typically associated with handling cruise or ferry ships, the unloading of the blades was carried out there using the vessel’s onboard cranes. Some blades were transferred directly onto specialized trailers, while others were temporarily placed in the storage yard. This quay was selected due to its direct access to the road network, which enables overland transport all the way to Ukraine, where the blades will be used in a wind energy project.

The entire process of servicing the ship and unloading the blades and additional components took two days.

The transshipment operation was managed by BLG in cooperation with Vetro Port & Shipping Services. BLG representatives noted that this was a unique challenge—the first time such long blades were handled in Gdańsk.

The overland transport of the blades is being carried out by the company Liburnia.
