Construction is underway in the Gulf of Gdańsk on one of the key components of the future FSRU terminal – the deep-water protective breakwater. The project is being carried out by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, while newly released footage shows the construction of the massive reinforced concrete caissons that will form the structure.
According to the Maritime Office in Gdynia, 13 of the 24 prefabricated caissons have already been floated out, with two installed in their final position. This means that more than 55 per cent of the total breakwater length has already been completed. The structure will extend for almost 1.3 km and will protect the terminal from wave action, ensuring safe access and operations for LNG carriers delivering liquefied natural gas. The project also includes the construction of a new approach channel and navigational aids.
The breakwater forms part of the strategic FSRU project being developed by GAZ-SYSTEM. The floating storage and regasification unit will have the capacity to store and regasify more than 6 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, equivalent to around one-third of Poland's current domestic demand. The gas will be delivered into the national transmission system via onshore and subsea infrastructure currently under construction. The terminal is scheduled to enter service at the turn of 2027 and 2028. The investment is intended to strengthen Poland's energy security and further diversify its gas supply sources.
