Barcelona Maersk, one of the newest vessels in the fleet of Danish shipping company A.P. Moller - Maersk, called at Baltic Hub Container Terminal two days ago, berthing at the quay of the newly opened T3 terminal, commissioned last year.

The container vessel Barcelona Maersk, formally delivered earlier this year in Ulsan, South Korea, is a next-generation unit equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of operating on methanol. It has been designed with a view to reducing the environmental footprint of deep-sea shipping operations.

“For Maersk, this is part of a long-term strategy. From Baltic Hub’s perspective, it confirms the terminal’s role as a key link in modern, low-emission supply chains,” the operator said in a social media statement.

Measuring 350 metres in length and 56 metres in beam, with a capacity of 17,480 TEU, Barcelona Maersk sails under the Danish flag and is among the latest additions to Maersk’s fleet. The vessel was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Its godmother is Berit Andersen, Senior Communications Advisor within Maersk’s Fleet Management and Technology division.

The ship belongs to Maersk’s latest series of large container vessels fitted with dual-fuel propulsion systems enabling operation on methanol as well as conventional fuels. The use of methanol is intended to significantly reduce sulphur emissions and cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to approximately 60–70 per cent compared with conventional ships of this class, provided green methanol is used.

The T3 terminal at Baltic Hub now forms a central element in the development of the wider port complex, substantially increasing operational capacity and throughput potential for ultra-large container vessels. The new infrastructure has enabled a growing number of deep-sea calls and improved cargo handling efficiency.

In March 2026, Baltic Hub Container Terminal handled 291,918 TEU, recording the highest monthly container throughput in its history. The result is 9 per cent higher than the previous record set in October 2025.
