A new ASD Tug 2111 for WUŻ Port and Maritime Services arrived at the Port of Gdańsk on Monday morning. The vessel was built by the Damen Shipyards Changde shipyard in China, based on a contract signed in September last year.
The handover of the tug took place on 23 October in Rotterdam, from where the vessel reached Gdańsk on 3 November. Named Argo, it is the eighth tug supplied by the Dutch manufacturer to join the company’s fleet, underlining WUŻ’s commitment to the development of the Port of Gdańsk.
The ASD 2111 is one of the newest models in Damen’s compact tug series. Despite its small size, it offers up to 50 tonnes of bollard pull and measures 21 metres in length. Thanks to its dimensions and capabilities, it is perfectly suited for operations in the inner part of the Port of Gdańsk.
Although the vessel was built according to the standard ASD Tug 2111 design, Damen adapted it to WUŻ’s specific requirements. This included implementing a winterisation package, FiFi 1 firefighting capabilities, and other modifications enabling operations at facilities such as the LNG terminal in the Port of Gdańsk.
Before the handover in Rotterdam, the tug’s capabilities were thoroughly tested and demonstrated together with one of Damen’s fully electric RSD-E 2513 tugs. Following company tradition, the vessel’s name references Greek mythology. The ASD Tug 2111 is named Argo, after the legendary ship on which Jason and the Argonauts set out in search of the Golden Fleece.
WUŻ emphasises that it is expanding its fleet to support the development of the Port of Gdańsk, which is the Baltic Sea’s largest port in terms of annual cargo throughput. Over the years, this activity has made the company the largest towing enterprise in Poland, currently operating eighteen vessels, including a range of Damen tugboat models.
