Bechtel Opens Gdańsk Office to Support Poland's First Nuclear Power Plant
Date of publication: 12.06.2026

Bechtel, the main contractor for the construction of Poland's first nuclear power plant, has opened a new office in Gdańsk. The company is expanding its engineering and operational support base for the AP1000 project in the Pomeranian region, increasing employment and strengthening cooperation with local institutions and businesses. The Gdańsk office is expected to employ 220 staff, primarily engineers.

– The virtual world offers tremendous opportunities, but a nuclear power plant must be built in the real world by real people, including engineers. That is why the location of our office in Gdańsk is extremely important. The Gdańsk office will support the project's construction phase. Our Warsaw office is focused more on design and procurement activities. We want to be present where the investment is being delivered. Gdańsk and the wider Pomeranian region are a natural place for us to build long-term relationships with regional partners, universities and local businesses. We are developing the project's engineering capabilities here and steadily increasing the participation of Polish companies and specialists in its delivery – Leszek Hołda, President of Bechtel Poland, told Gospodarka Morska.

Located across three floors of the Alchemia Aurum office tower and covering nearly 3,000 square metres, the new office will employ approximately 220 people. A key area of activity will be the Construction team, responsible for preparing and delivering the nuclear power plant project.

“This investment is transforming Poland’s energy sector and economy, not only at the national level but also regionally. That makes Bechtel’s presence in Pomerania all the more important,” said Wojciech Wrochna, the Government Plenipotentiary for Critical Energy Infrastructure.

“As the investor in the nuclear power plant being developed in Pomerania, we have been present in the region for some time and are steadily strengthening that presence. The project is now entering its next phase, making Bechtel’s decision a natural step forward. As the investment progresses, the company’s operational and engineering resources in the region will continue to expand. This is an important element of preparations for the construction of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. Ongoing cooperation with regional partners and the development of local content are also crucial to ensuring the efficient delivery of the project,” said Marek Woszczyk, President of Polish Nuclear Power Plants (PEJ).

Woszczyk noted that some PEJ employees are also based in the Gdańsk office complex.

“This physical presence matters. Direct access to public authorities and companies such as Bechtel genuinely helps,” he said.

Global Experience and Regional Cooperation

The opening marks another milestone in Bechtel’s expansion in Poland following the launch of its main office in Warsaw in 2023. While the Warsaw headquarters will remain the company’s central office in Poland, the Gdańsk branch will serve as a major operational and engineering hub for the AP1000 project.

The new office will support the construction of the nuclear power plant in the Choczewo municipality and contribute to the development of local engineering and construction capabilities in the Pomerania region.

– Poland is delivering one of the most important infrastructure and energy projects in its history. Bechtel brings experience gained from more than 150 nuclear projects worldwide. Opening an office in Gdańsk is a natural progression of the project, strengthening our presence in Pomerania and preparing the company for the next stages of implementation at the project site. The close proximity to local stakeholders involved in the project and to the new headquarters of our client, Polish Nuclear Power Plants, is also a significant advantage – said Leszek Hołda.

The new office is intended not only to support the Choczewo project operationally, but also to become Bechtel’s second centre for developing engineering expertise in this part of Europe, alongside Warsaw. The company emphasises that developing local content and cooperation with Polish partners and regional institutions remains a key element of its operations in Poland.

In February 2026, Bechtel signed an agreement with the Pomeranian company DORACO to provide facilities supporting geological and geotechnical investigations at the project site. In May, it concluded a contract with Unihouse to build accommodation facilities for 1,000 workers at the future nuclear power plant. At the same time, the company is conducting dozens of procurement processes related to the project, with a combined value of approximately PLN 1.7 billion.

Bechtel is also expanding cooperation with universities in the region, particularly with the Gdańsk University of Technology, supporting the development of future talent for the nuclear energy sector and major infrastructure projects.

Bechtel “Mooring” in Gdańsk

The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives of national and local government, project partners, universities and the regional business community. A symbolic highlight of the event was the tying of a mooring line to a bollard by Bechtel representatives and invited guests, reflecting the event’s theme, “Mooring in Gdańsk”, and underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to the region.

– The opening of Bechtel’s new office in Gdańsk is an important signal for Pomerania and confirms the region’s key role in delivering Poland’s strategic energy investments. It is also an opportunity to develop new skills, create jobs and strengthen cooperation with local companies – said Pomeranian Voivode Beata Rutkiewicz during the ceremony.

“Pomerania has been developing expertise in modern energy, industry and major infrastructure projects for many years. We are pleased that Bechtel is expanding its presence here and intends to work with regional businesses, universities and local partners in delivering this investment,” said Mieczysław Struk, Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

He stressed that the key long-term benefit of the PEJ project would not only be energy security and economic gains, but also the development of new capabilities among Pomeranian workers and companies, generating lasting benefits for the future.
