August turned out to be a record month for the sea road connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdansk, in operation since September last year.

According to statistics provided by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, the number of surface vessels using the New World Sea Port crossing is increasing. Both yachts and larger vessels have used it, and even ships have happened. The local Elbląg-based website portel.pl reported that the number of vessels increased sharply in the summer, which can be explained, among other things, by the ongoing holiday season. Statistics group them into recreational, fishing, state and commercial. It was the recreational ones that saw the biggest increase. In May, there were 96, followed by 153, 245 and finally a record 291 in the following months, with a total of 342 boats and vessels using the crossing in August alone. Since the fairway opened in September last year, 1,778 vessels have used it, with 1,311 so far in 2023.

Statistics provided by the authority suggest that the proportion of leisure craft may fall during the autumn and winter, while the number of commercial vessels remains fairly constant each month, averaging 30. Periodically, the number of state-owned vessels increases in specific months, with fishing vessels accounting for the smallest proportion in the data.

The construction of the Vistula Spit crossing was primarily intended to provide Poland with its own access to the Baltic Sea from the Vistula Lagoon. Previously, it had been necessary to use rivers flowing into the sea or through the Pilawa Strait, which belongs to Russia. This also indicates a desire to increase the economic attractiveness of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, including the city and port of Elbląg, as well as other harbours for ships and boats in the area. After the start of the war in Ukraine in February, the project has taken on greater importance due to the cooling of relations with the Russian Federation, as well as the safety of ships and boats wishing to access Polish ports. In particular, Elbląg and its port as well as other ports on the Vistula Spit. In the period March-April this year, the armed forces, together with other institutions, conducted an exercise pk. "Zalew-23", the aim of which was to demonstrate the ability of the armed forces, including naval forces, to respond to threats of military and non-military nature from the sea, using the new waterway through the Vistula Spit, as well as in the border area of the Vistula Spit. The possibility of protecting critical infrastructure from terrorist threats was also examined.

In connection with the establishment of the New World Seaport on the Spit, further investments are currently underway or planned. These include the announcement of a tender for dredging work on the Elbląg River near the port. Local and municipal authorities are also preparing for the modernisation of the port infrastructure itself.
