Grain Exports Drive Surge in Throughput at HES Gdynia Bulk Terminal
Date of publication: 20.04.2026

In the past two months, HES Gdynia Bulk Terminal has recorded a marked increase in operational activity, driven primarily by intensified grain exports. The rise in throughput highlights the terminal’s growing role in handling agri-bulk cargo in Polish seaports and its importance within wider logistics chains.

A key factor underpinning this performance is the terminal’s modern and steadily expanding storage infrastructure. Grain storage capacity has been increased by a further 85,000 tonnes, reaching a total of 140,000 tonnes. The new facilities include a high-bay warehouse and a battery of three modern silos, all of which are currently operating at high utilisation levels in response to strong market demand.

Operational capacity has also been strengthened by a new rail unloading facility, designed to handle, among others, hopper wagons. This significantly streamlines the delivery of grain to port storage facilities, accelerating logistics processes while reducing road traffic in favour of more environmentally sustainable rail transport. The facility is now operating at high intensity, handling at least one full train set of export grain daily.

The total storage capacity of HES Gdynia for agri-bulk cargo currently stands at approximately 240,000 tonnes, making it the largest warehousing base among port operators in Poland. This extensive storage capacity, combined with high handling rates for both unloading and vessel loading operations, enables the terminal to process large cargo volumes within short timeframes.

Even at the peak of the grain export season—while simultaneously handling up to four Panamax vessels and conducting parallel operations involving other bulk cargoes such as coal, coke, fertilisers and minerals—the terminal maintains top operational efficiency standards. This capability is underscored by a record grain export loading rate exceeding 17,000 tonnes per day.

The continued growth of HES Gdynia Bulk Terminal demonstrates that sustained investment in modern infrastructure and the effective integration of rail transport are key drivers of competitiveness in seaports. This approach not only enables scaling up operations and responding flexibly to market demand, but also reinforces the terminal’s position as a modern and reliable logistics partner in the bulk cargo sector.
