Poland's First FSRU Construction Enters Major Phase
Date of publication: 15.07.2026

Construction of the FSRU terminal in the Gdańsk Bay has entered another major phase, with intensive offshore piling works now underway to create the foundations for the future LNG import facility. According to GAZ-SYSTEM, despite the challenges inherent in offshore construction, the project remains on schedule. Most of the steel piles have been supplied by the Polish company Impostal, while cargo handling operations are being carried out at Gdańsk Shipyard.

Offshore construction requires continuous adjustments to work schedules in response to changing weather and navigational conditions. GAZ-SYSTEM says it is working closely with contractors to minimise downtime and maintain construction progress. Offshore activities currently focus on pile installation and accompanying geodetic surveys. At the same time, preparations are underway for sand backfilling around the piles and the installation of reinforced concrete platforms. Their structural components are being fabricated and reinforced at production facilities in Gdańsk and Gdynia before being concreted following quality inspections.

Record-Scale Offshore Piling

The scale of the marine engineering works is unprecedented in Poland. According to Dariusz Woźniak, President of Impostal, the project is using the longest hydrotechnical steel piles ever supplied for this type of investment in the country. Measuring between 41 and 50 metres in length, more than 500 piles, with a combined steel weight of approximately 20,000 tonnes, will ultimately be driven into the seabed.

"The scale of the project is exceptional. More than 400 piles, each up to 50 metres long, are being installed under extreme offshore conditions approximately three kilometres from the shoreline. Poland has never before undertaken a marine engineering project of this kind. The logistics are equally demanding, with around 40,000 tonnes of material requiring transport and handling within just a few months. Operations are running continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week," said Dariusz Woźniak.

The piles are being installed offshore by Danish contractor Aarsleff.

Gdańsk Shipyard (formerly Baltic Operator) also plays a key role in the project's logistics chain, handling the preparation and transfer of the steel piles destined for the offshore terminal.

"The FSRU project demonstrates that Gdańsk Shipyard has the capability to become a logistics base for future strategic investments in the Gdańsk and Gdynia region. We are responsible for comprehensive logistics services and specialised welding works for offshore infrastructure components. More than 34,000 tonnes of material, including around 450 piles, are being processed at the shipyard. All works are progressing according to schedule while maintaining the highest quality and safety standards," said Bartosz Charkiewicz, Vice-President of Gdańsk Shipyard.

Microtunnel More Than Half Complete

Onshore works are currently focused on the construction of the project's microtunnel. GAZ-SYSTEM reports that more than half of its planned length has already been completed, with the project remaining fully on schedule. This phase of the investment is being carried out primarily by Polish contractors.

Several additional milestones are expected over the coming weeks. By the end of August, contractors plan to complete piling works for the northern mooring dolphins, finish welding the support structures for the reinforced concrete platforms, complete the microtunnelling works and begin preparations for retrieving the tunnel boring machine (TBM).

The Gdańsk Bay FSRU terminal is one of the largest infrastructure projects currently under construction in Poland. Progress achieved both offshore and onshore indicates that the project continues to advance in line with the agreed schedule and is steadily approaching its next major milestones.

Construction of the terminal is progressing in parallel with the completion of the FSRU vessel at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. The floating unit was launched in May 2026, marking the completion of the main hull construction and the start of outfitting and onboard systems testing. According to the current schedule, the vessel is expected to arrive in the Gdańsk Bay by the end of 2027, with commercial regasification services and the first LNG deliveries planned for the first quarter of 2028.
