The Port of Gdańsk handled more than 8 million tonnes of cargo in August 2026, marking the first month in its history in which monthly throughput exceeded this threshold. Compared with August last year, this represents a 13.3% increase.
From January through the end of August, the Port of Gdańsk handled 57.7 million tonnes of cargo, 10% more than in the same period of 2025. If the current growth rate continues through the end of the year, 2026 could bring another strong annual result for the port.
Liquid fuels remained the largest cargo category in August, with 3.9 million tonnes handled, up 5% year on year. They accounted for almost half of the port's total monthly throughput.
General cargo volumes also increased significantly. In August, the port handled 21% more general cargo than a year earlier, an increase of around 470,000 tonnes. Container tonnage rose by 15%, while the number of containers handled, measured in TEU, increased by 16%.
Some bulk cargo categories recorded even stronger growth. Ore throughput was 311% higher than in August 2025, while grain volumes increased by 90%. The only cargo category to record a decline was other bulk cargo, down 12%.
57.7 million tonnes after eight months
Liquid fuels remain the largest cargo category at the Port of Gdańsk. Around 26 million tonnes were handled during the first eight months of the year. General cargo ranked second, with 20.8 million tonnes.
August's result follows another record in July, when the port handled 7.9 million tonnes. The growth is not limited to a single cargo category, with significant increases recorded particularly in general cargo and containers, as well as ore and grain.
“Exceeding the threshold of 8 million tonnes in a single month is an important achievement for the Port of Gdańsk. We are particularly pleased that the growth covers various cargo categories. This demonstrates that the Port of Gdańsk is strengthening its position as a key transshipment hub and logistics gateway,” says Dorota Pyć, President of the Management Board of the Port of Gdańsk Authority.
